Shopify vs Shopify Plus: when is it time to upgrade?
Shopify Plus adds checkout customisation, B2B, automation and more room to scale. Here's how to tell whether your store actually needs it.

Shopify grows with you for a long time. But at some point, many brands ask the same question: is it time for Shopify Plus? Plus comes with a significantly higher monthly fee, so the upgrade should pay for itself.
What Shopify Plus adds
- Checkout customisation. Tailor the checkout with checkout extensions and Shopify Functions, for example custom discounts, delivery options or payment logic.
- B2B on the same platform. Company accounts, price lists and payment terms, without a separate wholesale store.
- Expansion stores. Separate stores for countries or brands, managed from one organisation.
- More automation and scale. Scheduled launches and sales, and room for high traffic peaks.
- Closer support. A more direct line to Shopify for larger merchants.
Signals that it's time
- Your checkout holds you back. You need logic the standard checkout can't handle.
- You sell B2B and B2C. Running two systems costs more than one Plus store.
- You're going international. Multiple stores, currencies and catalogues become hard to manage.
- Launches are stressful. Big drops and sales need scheduling and stability.
- Your team does repetitive work by hand. Tagging, inventory alerts and order routing can be automated.
When to wait
If your growth comes from marketing, product or conversion and the platform isn't the bottleneck, invest there first. Often a sharper theme, faster pages and a better checkout flow within standard Shopify deliver more, sooner.
Before you switch
- List the problems you expect Plus to solve, with their business value.
- Check your apps: some can be replaced by Plus features, others need updating.
- Plan the checkout work: extensions and Functions are where most of the value is.
The bottom line
Upgrade when the platform, not your marketing, is what's holding growth back. Then make sure you actually use what Plus offers, especially checkout customisation, B2B and automation.
